Today, September 16 is National Guacamole Day and Wholly Guacamole has launched a campaign to sell t shirts. 100% of monies raised will be given to Operation Purple and the National Military Family Association to help send 100 military kids to Operation Purple camp! Operation Purple is a special camp just for military kids with emphasis on kids who have parents who are or have been deployed. The organization is part of the National Military Family Association and non-profit.
The military is full of heroes. Not all of them wear the uniform. The families behind the soldiers serve and sacrifice daily and we want to take an opportunity to celebrate the often unsung heroes … military kids.
Two million kids say goodbye to one or both of their parents as they deploy every year. That’s a lot of missed birthdays, holidays, first day of school, last day of school, field trips, skinned knees and scary dreams. Let’s do what we can to get these kids something special and celebrate them as the Heroes behind the Heroes that they truly are.
I’m one of those kids — an Air Force brat! I clearly remember the lost and empty feeling while my father was sent to Viet Nam. Operation Purple wasn’t around then, but I know I would have enjoyed going to camp. It would have been fun and also helpful to spend time with others going through the same experience.
Although I was never blessed with children, I deployed often during my 17 year Air Force career and was always on stand-by. It’s comforting to know that military off-spring have their own place to go.
Wholly Guacamole teamed up with Brad Meltzer, NY Times bestselling author and creator of Ordinary People Change the World. His team created the artwork and donated the art design for the t-shirt and the use of his Heroes video for this Wholly Heroes program.

Brad Meltzer is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Inner Circle and The Book of Fate, as well as the bestsellers The Tenth Justice, Dead Even, The First Counsel, The Millionaires, The Zero Game, and The Book of Lies. He is also the author of the nonfiction bestseller, Heroes For My Son, a collection of fifty-two heroes from Jim Henson, to Rosa Parks, to Mr. Rogers. Brad is also the host of the History Channel TV show, Brad Meltzer’s Decoded — one of the co-creators of the TV show, Jack & Bobby — and the #1 selling author of the critically-acclaimed comic books, Identity Crisis and Justice League of America, for which he won the prestigious Eisner Award. His newest comic book, Heroes For My Daughter, was published in April 2012 (because his daughter finally wants her book).
His books have spent nearly a year on the bestseller lists, and have been translated into over 25 languages, from Hebrew to Bulgarian. In The Tenth Justice, the opening lines are: “Ben Addison was sweating. Like a pig.” In the Hebrew translation, it became: “Ben Addison was sweating. Like a horse.” We’re not sure if it’s a kosher thing or what.
Brad has played himself as an extra in Woody Allen’s Celebrity and earned credit from Columbia Law School for writing his first book, which became The Tenth Justice. He also co-wrote the oath that the President of the United States gives to all AmeriCorps members. Before all of that, he got 24 rejection letters for his true first novel, which still sits on his shelf, published by Kinko’s.
Raised in Brooklyn and Miami, Brad is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Columbia Law School. He currently lives in Florida with his wife, who’s also an attorney.
